We offer a variety of chemical peels that address a broad range of individual needs.  Our peels utilize mandelic, glycolic, pyruvic, trichloroacetic, kojic and lactic acids, alone or in combination.  The choice of the optimal peel for you takes into consideration not only the effect you are seeking, but also your skin color, level of skin dryness or oiliness, your general level of “sensitivity”, and how aggressive you wish to be.  Some peels will result in only a very mild pink tinge to the color of the skin for a few days, while others may produce some visible peeling. Your lifestyle, social and work commitments, and time period in which you wish to reach the desired effect can all impact the choice of which peel is best for you. There are also some highly specialized peels that are designed to treat specific problems or areas.

During the application of a peel, you may experience mild tingling, itching, or a mild sensation of heat.  These are completely normal effects and are transient.  After the procedure (with the exception of the MILK peel to be described below), gentle cleansers and moisturizers with photoprotection should be used for several days.  The degree of drying, flaking, and pink coloration after a peel can vary widely in severity from none to noticeable.  The day after your procedure you may experience a slight sensation of tightness; this will be replaced in the days that follow by a smooth texture and healthy glow.  Diligent photoprotection after any peel is crucial to preserving the best result.

Mandelic acid peels are best suited for those with more sensitive skin, and for individuals with redness and/or mild rosacea.  They can help to improve mild hyperpigmentation, and in my experience can diminish both the acne papules and redness associated with rosacea.  The resulting exfoliation is mild and generally not visible.  Peels are usually done at monthly intervals.  Three or more peels give optimal results.

Glycolic acid peels come in a range of strengths and are the most traditional peels.  They are usually performed at monthly intervals for 6 months.  They can be used to address fine lines and dyspigmentation, and are also helpful in patients with mild to moderate acne.   Because these peels come in a range of strengths, they offer great flexibility in how gently or aggressively they can be utilized.  In addition to treating the face, glycolic peels can be helpful in many areas, including the neck, chest, back, arms, and hands.

Pyruvic acid peels can be used to decrease fine lines and wrinkles, and provide a medium depth exfoliation. They can also help to reduce the severity of acne, even out skin tone, reduce the appearance of pores, and generally smooth the skin.  These are also used monthly for a period of 3 months. Minor flaking may occur for the first few days after this peel.  Pyruvic acid is an excellent alternative in individuals with normal to oily skin.

Trichloroacetic acid peels can help to decrease moderate hyperpigmentation, deeper lines and wrinkles, and small scars.  We utilize the Glytone Enerpeel system for these peels: this method is specifically designed to diminish the irritation and peeling associated with this moderate depth peel. Nonetheless, these peels may leave you with redness and some visible peeling for several days.

Lips and under eyes:

This targeted peel combines lactic acid with low dose trichlorooacetic acid for the treatment of the fine lines and dark pigmentation that can occur around the lips and eyes.  These peels are administered weekly for 4 consecutive weeks, and can result in a significant increase in the firmness of the skin.  Crow’s feet, and the vertical lines around the lips which can cause lipstick to “bleed”, are reduced.  Dark circles under the eyes and hyperpigmentation of the upper lip generally improve noticeably.  This peel program is an excellent alternative for those who wish to avoid using fillers around the mouth.

MILK peel:

This unique system is the latest addition to our peel options, and is an appealing alternative for those with dyspigmentation from the sun and for lightening flat (not raised) brown spots.  The   peel is a concentrated, short contact procedure that utilizes a combination of several acids in moderately high concentrations.  It is followed by a customized, therapeutic, month long home care system that enhances the in-office results. The home treatment system contains a   cleanser, moisturizers for day and night, and a spot treatment boosting cream.  All components of this system are designed to diminish pigment, resulting in clearer and and more youthful appearing complexion.
