Fraxel

Fraxel is a laser treatment that is able to precisely treat thousands of microscopic areas of the skin. Pinpoint laser beams penetrate the skin’s surface to eliminate old, damaged skin cells. Fraxel treatment stimulates the body’s own natural healing process, stimulating collagen and replacing damaged skin with fresh healthy skin. By design, Fraxel treatments target a portion of the surface, allowing the remaining skin to quickly heal the treated areas. Because it is a very precise technology, Fraxel is safe and effective on delicate areas like the neck, chest, and hands in addition to the face. There are immediate and progressive results.  After the initial healing is complete, the surface of your skin will feel softer and smoother. It will also look brighter with more even tone and color. Progressive results occur over the next 3 to 6 months as collagen is stimulated and the deeper layers of your skin strengthen.

Fraxel Restore, which is the latest version of Fraxel technology, actually contains two separate laser modes. The first specifically treats lines, wrinkles, and scarring that are deeper in the skin layers. The second mode is new and is effective for treating many forms of pigmentation, the discoloration that results from natural aging and sun exposure. The use of each laser during a treatment session can be tailored to your individual needs. By combining the two treatment modalities, patients can achieve more effective resurfacing, treating both deep and superficial conditions.

A topical anesthetic is applied to your skin before the procedure and cool air is continuously blown over the treatment area during the procedure to minimize discomfort.  After the treatment, most patients report a feeling similar to having had too much sun. This feeling usually disappears after an hour or two. You will have some degree of redness and puffiness. (The intensity and duration will depend on how aggressive the treatment is and on your particular healing characteristics, but it generally lasts 2-3 days.)  This is followed by several days of a fine flaking or peeling as well as a bronzed appearance to the skin. The skin may feel like fine sandpaper. You will be given gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and a sunscreen to use for several days after your procedure. After the healing process is complete (approximately 6 to 10 days), you will see fresher and younger looking skin, improved tone and texture, and a reduced appearance of unwanted brown spots.

Generally, 2 to 5 treatments are required for optimal results, depending on the condition of your skin before treatment. Deeper scars may require additional treatment sessions. Sessions are generally scheduled once month apart.  More than one area (face, neck, chest, hands) may be treated at once if so desired. It is very important to protect your skin from excessive sun exposure after Fraxel treatments.
